Help / DNS propagation
DNS propagation
Asks nine public DNS resolvers the same question and shows them side by side, so you can see which ones still have an old answer after a change.
How to use it
- Type the domain and pick a record type.
- Press Compare. Resolvers that agree with the majority say Match; others say Differs.
Reading the results
- Resolver
- The DNS service devices ask (like Google or Cloudflare). Each keeps its own cache.
- Match / Differs
- Whether that resolver’s answer equals the most common answer.
- TTL
- How long that resolver may keep its current answer before asking again.
Examples
- github.com NS records agree everywhere
- example.com A records
From the command line
curl "https://webmaster.nexayori.com/propagation?q=github.com" curl "https://webmaster.nexayori.com/propagation?q=github.com&format=json"
| q | Domain |
| type | A (default), AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT, SOA, CAA |
| format | text, json or html |
Questions
How long does propagation take?
At most the old record’s TTL, for each resolver. Lower the TTL a day before planned changes to make them land faster.
Big sites show “Differs” for A records?
CDNs hand out different addresses by design. Compare NS or SOA instead.
Limitations
- All queries leave from Cloudflare’s network, so this shows resolver caches, not what users in other countries see from their ISP.
